These are thirteen women who did some very bad things and became famous, or should I say infamous, in the process. What is it about these women that is so fascinating? Why do we love to read about them?

1. Anne Bonny - Pirate

a cross-dressing female pirate, lover of Mary Read (also a cross-dressing pirate) and mistress to "Calico Jack" Rackman. Was tried for Piracy in 1720 in the Bahamas. Was sentenced to be hanged, claimed to be pregnant to delay execution but escaped and disappeared into the history books.

2. Ching Shih - Pirate

terrorized the China Sea during the early 1900's. Commanded approximately 1800 ships and some 80,000 sailors. Married her lieutenant, who also happended to be her adoptive son, left pirating and opened a gambling hall in 1810. Little else is known about her life.

3. Empress Wu - only female ruler of China

overthrew Empress Wang, current wife of the Emperor by accusing her of murdering one of Wu's children and of witchcraft, so that Wu could then marry the Emperor. Wang was innocent of both crimes, Wu murdered her own child to usurp Wang. Wu murdered several of her own children ( 3 of her 4 sons) and many of her husbands relatives. She acted as regent to three of her sons, when they proved to be uncontrollable, she had them killed. When her last remaining son ascended to the throne, she ruled in his name, and eventually ruled in her own name. She was eventually overthrown by her own ministers and died a short time later of natural causes at the ripe age of 80.

4. Lizzie Borden - Spinster

accused of murdering her father and stepmother with a hatchet. She was later acquitted of the crimes, due in part to poor evidence, but also because people had a hard time believing a woman was capable of such a crime. History, however, will always remember her as a murderer and the subject of a nursery rhyme.

5. Catherine the Great - Empress of Russia

married Tsar Peter III, and promptly overthrew him, in a bloodless coup, with the help of her lovers. The Tsar survived for six months after the coup. She had numerous lovers, whom she always bestowed monetary gifts and titles upon. She effectively excluded her son Paul from court politics and eventually the succession, in favor of her grandson. She was known as a "knowledgeable"despot. Catherine ruled Russia for 34 years.

6. Mata Hari - spy

exotic dancer and courtesan who spied for Germany during WWI. She was known for her intense sensuality, and her ability to get high ranking Allied officials into bed. She was later tried for espionage and executed by firing squad.

7. Barbara Palmer - mistress

lover of King Charles II. While not a great beauty, there was something very enticing about her. She was in the habit of helping herself to the Privy Purse and living extravagantly. During the many years in which she was mistress to the king, she gave birth to 6 children, 5 of which Charles acknowledged. Was later "overthrown" as mistress in favor of an actress, a young and beautiful actress.

8. Katherine Howard - 5th wife of Henry VIII

was approximately 15-18 years old when she came to court as a lady-in-waiting for Anne of Cleves, 4th wife of Henry VIII. Married Henry, after some intense lobbying by her family, a very short time after the marriage to Anne was annulled. Was considered by many to be foolish and easily controlled. Had an affair with Thomas Culpeper, the favorite courtier to the King. They were found out and they were both tried and executed for adultery. Two short years after her marriage began, she was dead.

9. Tokyo Rose - radio propagandist

was the voice of the Japanese radio propaganda machine during WWII. Tokyo Rose was a generic name given to female radio personalities of Japanese propaganda radio. The name is most associated with Iva Toguri. Iva was American born, but went to Tokyo when her aunt became ill. She never renounced her American Citizenship, and was later tried for treason, and went to prison. She was pardoned by President Ford in 1977, his last act as President.

10. Mary Ann Cotton - serial killer

killed up to 20 people, mostly with arsenic, including three of her 4 husbands and 2 of her stepchildren, during the mid 1800's. Insured each husband and child, then killed them for the insurance money. After the death of her youngest stepchild, a county coroner had some suspicions about the little boys death. It was discovered, after the body was exhumed, that he did not die of natural causes. An inquiry was held and the deaths of her other husbands and stepchildren were discovered. She was eventually hanged for murder.

11. Mary Mallon - Typhoid Mary

was the first known "healthy carrier' of typhoid. She infected up to 47 people while working as a cook. She denied that she was a carrier and that she was making people ill. The Board of health quarantined her at least twice, and she died from pneumonia during her last quarantine. "Typhoid Mary" is now a moniker given to people who are carriers of a dangerous disease that refuse to take appropriate precautions.

12. Mary Stuart - Queen of Scots

was tried for treason for her part in at least 3 assassination attempts against her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Was second in line to the succession after Elizabeth. She claimed she was innocent and that others acted without her knowledge, however papers were found in her possession that confirmed she had intimate knowledge of each plot.

13. Eva Braun - mistress

mistress to Adolf Hitler. She met him before he became Chancellor of Germany, and for a long time was considered his dirty little secret. Committed suicide in 1945, with Hitler, in an underground bunker.

These are just a few of the notorius women in history. Most had bad endings, but not all were guilty of the crimes for which they were accused. While fascinating, I would rather be a famous woman, one who didn't resort to sex or murder to get on in life. What are your thoughts? Are there other, more fascinating women that you like to read about?

Word of the Day: turpitude

remember this is a game...no cheating allowed. Find the meaning somewhere in the depths of your brain, make it up, the person closest (post answer in comments section) gets mentioned on my next post. Have fun.

Useless Information: What do bulletproof vests, fire escapes, windshield wipers, and laserbprinters all have in common? These are my opinion and in no particular order.

1. The Dark hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon. What is not to like about this series. Hot Guys, Fabulous Heroines, paranormal, vampires, werewolves, Gods and the list goes on and on.

2. In Death by JD Robb (aka Nora Roberts). Eve Dallas kicks ass, takes names and always closes the case. And, of course, the amazingly hot and super sexy Roarke. Gets my blood pumping evertime.

3. The Merry Gentry series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Spicy reading, almost erotic, and a great story line that always leaves me wanting more.

4. Odd Thomas, Forever Odd, and Brother Odd by Dean Koontz. A sweet and strange hero who always seems so lost.

5. The Bhelliom and Tamuli series by David Eddings. Strong women and Knights, Gods who are just a little bit crazy and/or stupid and a world in need of saving.

6. The Crazy series by Tara Janzen. These guys can watch my back and front anytime.

7. Anita Blake Vampire Hunter by Laurell K. Hamilton. Can you say menage a trois..and then some.

8. Queen Betsy series by Mary Janice Davidson. The most clueless and reluctant Vampire Queen EVER. But, the girls got some amazing shoes.

9. Fred the Mermaid series also by Mary Janice Davidson. One mermaid in desperate need of anger management.

10. The Carpathians by Christine Feehan. Vampires in need of a woman to save them. I love these guys. They are smoldering.

11. Aisling Grey series by Katie MacAlister. I should be so lucky to have a hot dragon knocking down my door.

12. Cotton Malone series by Steve Berry. These thrillers make The DaVinci Code look like chilplay.

13. The Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward. These vampires are to die for. And what a clever take on the vampire myth.

I'm sure there are many more great series out there. These are my top thirteen.

Oh, and the winner of last times word of the day was Chris. She got closest on the meaning. The word was circumlocution: the use of an unnecessarily large number of words to get an idea across.

Word of The Day: indurate
Remember the rules are: no looking it up, pull the best that you can out of the depths of your brain. I'll mention you on my blog next time.

Useless Information: The first paperback book was printed - by Penguin Publishing in 1935.
Who knows...maybe this will be a Jeopardy question someday.

Now it's my turn to rant!!!

So, yesterday, Chris blogged about rude people, especially drivers. Well today it's my turn. My rant is about rude drivers and dare I say it, and sound rude, stupid drivers. Today was a day filled with bad and rude drivers. They were all ages, races, sexes, and even police. I was tailgated, almost hit, and apparently police don't understand how right of way works. So I believe that there should be some new driving rules. New rules for those seeking a licence and for those currently in possession of one.
New Driving Rules:

Teenagers- you cannot get a licence until you learn the following things:
to pull over to the curb to park, the middle of the street is not the right place to
offload passengers
texting while driving is dangerous and stupid
no more than 4 people in a car at one time, it's not a clown car where you try to fit 9 kids in a Kia

Senior Citizens- this does not apply to all seniors, there are some amazing older people in this world. This applies to all those who can no longer see the steering wheel, let alone the road. Yes it's a loss of independence, but I don't enjoy playing dodge the car all the time. Give up the licence. Please.

All others- Read your driving books provided by the state. Learn what right of way means
Blocking an intersection is rude, I know that you must desperately need to shave those 15 seconds from your drive time. But, guess what I want to get home too.
If you can't get through the light, wait, it's gonna change to green again real soon, I promise.
Tailgating is rude, keep it up and someone is gonna decide that they want a new car and make you a new front bumper, it will include parts of their rear bumper. Your insurance company will adore you.

This is all. It is probably very rude of me to be this way, but I drive with my kids in the car. I know the rules of the road, obey the speed limit. I like to think that I'm a courteous driver, but people are really starting to scare me. Remember, you aren't the only one on the road, there are others driving as well. So, be courteous, be aware, and take driving lessons. And, yes, I'm PMSing.

*************************************************************************************

Today's useless information: The alarm clock was not invented by the Marquis de Sade, as some suspect, but rather by a man named Levi Hutchins of Concord, New Hampshire, in 1787. Perversity, though, characterized his invention from the beginning. The alarm on his clock could ring only at 4 am. Rumor has it that Hutchins was murdered by his wife at 4:05 am on a very dark and deeply cold New England morning.

This tells me that he got what was coming to him. Maybe I should let my husband read this. I really hate all the times he hits snooze, at 440 am. Please, get up, there is a reason you set it for that time. GET UP!

************************************************************************************

Last time there was no winner for word of the day. Sorry. Impuissant: weak, powerless

New Word of the Day: circumlocution
Have fun.
Answer in my comments, get it right I'll mention how smart you are next time I blog.

************************************************************************************
Found this little gem on Judy's blog (sorry don't know how to do links yet Judy), my answers:

Famous People Meme —

Which famous person in each of the following categories would you like to meet?
Author — Nora Roberts and Anne McCaffrey
Movie Actor — Denzel Washington
TV Actor — Lauren Graham
Musician/Singer — Frank Sinatra
Historical Figure — Jesus
Fictional Book Character — Asheron and Simi (two for one)
Fictional Movie or TV Character — Lorelai Gilmore

What are your answers?

HAPPY 4TH OF JULY!!!!!

Happy Fourth of July!!!! Hope everyone has a great day, eats way too much and enjoys the fireworks wherever they are. We will be camping this weekend, and since we will be up on the Flattops, we may not see any fireworks :( But, we love to camp so oh well. In honor of today I'm going to post 3 things, a recipe for a great pasta salad perfect for a picnic and several pieces of Useless Information pertaining to the 4th of July and the founding of our country.

Grilled Veggie Pasta Salad

1lb cooked rotinni tricolor pasta
1-2 cups baby dutch potatoes, boiled, sliced into 1/2 inch slices
2 ears corn
1 yellow squash
1 zucchini
1 bundle green onion
1 bundle asparagus
1 red bell pepper
1/2 cup Parmesan cheese
1/2 - 1 cup favorite Italian dressing
2 tbs parsley flakes
salt, pepper
2 tbs olive oil

slice zucchini and squash into 1/2 inch slices, trim onions and asparagus, cut pepper into big pieces, coat all veggies, except potatoes, with oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill until all veggies are tender, excluding the potatoes, don't grill them. Let cool, cut into bite size chunks, toss with all remaining ingredients and chill for at least one hour before serving. Enjoy.

Now as to last times useless info I really am shocked that neither Chris nor Judy commented. I would think that as writers they would be, well, shocked. When I told my hubby about the info, he said he has read plenty of books that had great covers and boring info. I was shocked by this, because I have only seen my hubby read a grand total of....4 books. We have been together 8 years. Seems strange that I, a voracious reader, would marry a man who thinks that a tool catalog is the greatest read ever. He was reading a book the first day I met him, that was back in 2000, in our almost 7 years of marriage he has read 3 books, self help books, he didn't finish them. I love that man, and I'm okay with the fact that he doesn't read. I just find it strange that I read SOOOOO much, and he reads SOOOO little.

Today's Useless Information: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Monroe all died on July 4th.
I have nothing to say about that, well maybe a little something. Ummm, nope, I'm at a loss.
John Hancock was the only one of fifty signatories of the Declaration of Independence who actually signed it in July.
And once again ladies and gentlemen, our government at work. Can you say procrastination?
George Washington grew marijuana.
This one says it all.
Benjamin Franklin's peers did not give him the assignment of writing the Declaration of Independence because they feared he would conceal a joke in it.
Ben must have been one fun guy.

The winners for last times word of the day are Chris and Judy. I went with the obvious, and it was just too obvious. So this week I'm getting tough.

Word of the Day: impuissant.

So once again, the rules are simple, no looking it up online, it must be somewhere in your mind, and then post your answer in my comments section. You win nothing, except my adoration, oh and a mention on my next post. Good luck.

What Your These Fireworks Say About You

You are chaotic, inspired, and very creative.

You're so creative, people don't really recognize your creativity.

What's expressive for you sometimes looks like a mess.

But you don't really care... you enjoy making your messes!

The Fireworks Test

Pet Peeves

Pet peeves, there are so many. The biggest one for me is tailgating. That's right, I hate tailgaters. This morning, while driving to work, a lady on her cell, decided that I wasn't driving fast enough. So she proceeded to get as far in my trunk as possible. Didn't matter to her that there was a dump truck in front of me, we were going the speed limit, and if I decided to hit my brakes, she would be paying my repair bills. I leave for work early, I hate, hate, hate to be late. I want to get there 10 minutes early. So, when you tailgate, all that tells me is you are impatient and didn't leave early enough. That is not my problem. Stop riding my ass. And, when I tap my brakes, I'm being polite. I tapped them, I didn't slam on them like I really want to . So get a clue. That is my rant for today.

I decided that I wanted to add something to this blog. And, as I have a love for useless info, I thought I would share some each time I post. Just something that you might not have known and will more than likely have no use for in the future, unless you get onto Jeopardy.

Today's useless information: An estimated 2.5 million books will be shipped in the next twelve months with the wrong book cover.
info courtesy of The Useless Information Society

That's right folks, 2.5 million books. Talk about a publishing error. And, where exactly was that guy from quality control? I bet he was reading a book. One with a very HOT cover, and not so hot contents.

There was no winner for word of the day, although Chris does get partial credit.
Beau geste means a beautiful gesture. As in that was a beautiful gesture giving him your clothes.

New word for today : umpteen
Remember, no cheating, just try to wing it here. Post your answer to my comments section, and I'll post the name of the correct person next time. And, Chris, if you don't get this one, then there is something wrong with the world.

Your Score: Much Ado About...

You scored 26% = Tragic, 50% = Comic, 37% = Romantic, 30% = Historic

You Scored Much Ado About Nothing! First published in 1600, Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's most enduring comedies, and probably his most performed to this day. Much Ado About Nothing tells the story of two pairs of would-be lovers and the hysterical events that happen surrounding the wedding. As Claudio and Hero prepare to marry, Don Pedro and his friends, bored with the length of preparation time, take it upon themselves in the meantime to play matchmaker to Benedick and Beatrice, two sharp-tongued would-be lovers whose love for each other is masked by the "merry war of words" in which they are engaged that both of them are too stubborn to lose. Based on your results, we believe you to be a quick-witted, light-hearted romantic who is probably very charming and charismatic. While your stubbornness may sometimes get the better of you, we are confident that you always eventually come to your senses and do what's best. You probably have a lot of friends and we like you too!

Link: The Which Shakespeare Play Are You? She was 24 when she died, she had been sick for so long, that while it was sad and hard to lose her, it wasn't completely unexpected. For years she had been struggling with Lupus, and on June 18th, it got the better of her. As we sat there listening to her friends and family discuss her short life, I was touched and encouraged by their words. They didn't focus on her illness, they focused on how she LIVED. She was so full of life, energy, activity. She was in one word, amazing. I will miss her, but I will celebrate the life she led, as well.

After the memorial service, I went and helped some friends move. I hate moving. But, it had to be done. They were only moving across town, but the day was so long. Why do we collect and keep so much junk? Oh, I know we always say we will need this and that must go with us. But, why? When my husband and I moved into our new house 2 years ago, we kept stuff we swore we would need. Most is sitting in the basement, and for the life of me I can't remember what half the junk is. Yet, I can't bring myself to just toss it away, I must go through each and every box, making sure that I have preserved, saved, horded anything of remote value. Sigh.

So Friday was a day of extremes. There was a celebration of a life lived well, and the oh so wonderful stress of moving a life from one house to the next. Life goes on, and we go with it.

Today's word for the day: beau geste.

Next week I will post the meaning, if anyone knows it feel free to post in my comments section. And no cheating, just see if it is somewhere in the depths of your mind. You don't win anything, except your name mentioned in my next blog entry. :)
